Lake Powell is a beautiful man-made reservoir on the Colorado river in the United States. Located between Utah and Arizona, it is the second largest man-made reservoir in the United States. Lake Powell was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the Glen Canyon Dam in the early 1960s. It is a storage facility for the Upper Basin states of the Colorado River Compact. The lake has a storing capacity of 24,322,000 acre feet of water when full. It is the second largest reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States.
The lake, along with Horseshoe Bend and the notable Rainbow Bridge National Monument rock formation, is now part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is a popular summer destination. It draws more than two million visitors annually. Recreational activities in the area include boating, fishing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, and hiking. Visitors to the lake can tour its waters via boat rental or guided tour. Tour operators and lodging can be found in the nearby town of Page in Arizona.
