Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon - The Deepest Lake in Iceland

Located at the south end of the glacier Vatnajokull, Jokulsarlon is a large glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland. It is the best known glacial lakes in Iceland and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. Covering an area of approximately 18 square kilometers, Jokulsarlon is the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is also the deepest lake in the country approaching a depth of 250 meters.

Jokulsarlon started to form in 1934-1935 and grew to 7.9 square kilometers in 1975. Today, the lake covers more than 18 square kilometers. The growth of the lake is due to the  heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. The size of the lagoon has increased fourfold since the 1970s. The lake is separated from the sea by only a short distance and it may eventually be transformed into an inlet of the sea if it keeps expanding like this.

Jokuslarlon is considered as one of Iceland's best known and most popular natural wonders. The lagoon offers a magnificent view with enormous icebergs floating around. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes float on the lagoon. It is an unforgettable experience to sail on the lagoon on boats and observe the color changes in the ice, the amazing sculptures of nature and the animal life that thrives there. It is a pure natural art and a spectacular sight.

Jokuslarlon glacier lagoon is not far from the Icelandic Ring Road, and buses traveling between Hofn and Reykjavik usually stop there. You can take a 30-40 minutes guided boat trip on the lagoon and sail among icebergs more than a thousand years old. If you’re lucky you might see some curious seals. A great opportunity for photography.
